Make spelling fun and entertaining for millions of children by working on the Learning A-Z project team! Students will work together to design and implement a full-stack, web-based educational game.

Abstract:
Students on the Learning A-Z project team will create a mobile-friendly, web-based app that generates an interactive spelling game based on a K-5 reader’s library and vocabulary words from a level-appropriate list. The tool will be compatible with the current Learning A-Z product line.

Programming – Front End (2 – 3 students)

Specific Skills: General Programming. Our company standard is Angular JS.

Likely Majors: CS (All), Any

Programming – Back End (1 – 2 students)

Specific Skills: Back-end programming. Our company standard is PHP and MySQL.

Likely Majors: CS (All), Any

UI/UX (1 – 2 students)

Specific Skills: Development of user flow. Creation of wireframes and high-fidelity mockups. Implementation of CSS and HTML based on company style guides.

Likely Majors: SI (MS), ARTDES (All), CS (All)

Literacy Development (1 student)

Specific Skills: Interest in literacy development. General knowledge of best practices in Elementary Education Classroom, best literacy pedagogy, and assessment. (Students in this role must have some basic programming experience and/or be willing to devote time to learning).

Alexandra Brown

Alexandra is a Software Engineer III at Learning A-Z. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 2017 and has been working at LAZ ever since. Her interests include web development, teaching, and clean code.

Faculty Mentor

Amy Hortop
Experiential Learning Coordinator, Integrative Systems + Design

Hortop earned her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University and her M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. Her industry experience has primarily been in the automotive field, both here and in Germany. Most recently, she had taught in Mechanical Engineering as the ME 450 (Capstone Design) coordinator, and now coordinates the Capstone course in Integrative Systems + Design (ISD 503). Amy has previously mentored MDP projects.

Course Substitutions: Honors, ChE Elective, CS MDE/Capstone, CE MDE, EE MDE, IOE Senior Design

Internship/Summer Opportunity: Students will be guaranteed an interview for summer 2021 internships. The interviews will take place in January/February 2021.

Citizenship Requirements: This project is open to all students.

IP/NDA: Students will sign IP/NDA documents that are unique to Learning A-Z.
