Honda Sensing® advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are systems developed to automate, adapt and enhance vehicle systems for safety and better driving. Students on this team will develop algorithms to gather and interpret weather data, communicate to the ADAS, and drive decisions about how individual systems will be utilized.

Abstract:
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) are systems developed to automate, adapt and enhance vehicle systems for safety and better driving. Honda Sensing®ADAS includes collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition. These systems use cameras and sensors to assess the road and surroundings around the car and make decisions about when and how to assist the driver. Honda would like to explore utilizing current weather data to assist in these decisions. Students on this team will develop algorithms to gather and interpret weather data, communicate to the ADAS, and drive decisions about how individual systems will be utilized.

Sponsor Mentors

Paritosh Kelkar (PK)

PK is a Research Engineer at Honda R&D Detroit. He is working on projects that involve developing proof-of -concept systems with Cooperative Localization and Path Planning Algorithms. PK graduated with a degree in robotics from the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on motion planning and navigation. Also, he will beat you at ping pong!

Executive Mentor

Shigenobu Saigusa
Chief Engineer, Honda Research

Faculty Mentor

Drew Gronewold
Associate Professor, Conservation Ecology, Climate + Energy |Water

Professor Gronewold’s research interests lie in hydrological modeling, with a focus on propagating uncertainty and variability into model-based water resources management decisions. His specific research areas include predicting runoff in ungauged basins, monitoring and understanding water quality dynamics in coastal areas, and incorporating probability theory and Bayesian statistics into watershed-scale data sets and forecasting tools. He holds an adjunct appointment in the U-M Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Prior to his appointment in SEAS, he worked in the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory as a hydrologist and physical scientist.

Course Substitutions: Honors, ChE Elective, CS MDE/Capstone, CE MDE, Data Science Capstone, EE MDE, IOE Senior Design, ISD AUTO 503, ROB 590

Internship/Summer Opportunity:

  • Students will be guaranteed an interview for 2021 internships. Internships will be located at various Honda facilities in Ohio and LA. The interviews will take place in early 2021 at the Honda R&D Office in Ann Arbor.
  • A summer stipend to continue work in Ann Arbor may be available.

Citizenship Requirements: This project is open to all students.
